Open ended question: a question that prompts a conversation and cannot be answered with a simply yes or no.
Examples of open ended questions:
- What was it like to…
- What was the best part of…
- What was the hardest part about…
- How did you feel about…
- How did you know…
- What’s surprised you the most about…
- In what way is that similar/different from…
- Why do you want…
And when you are trying to learn more, you can always say "Tell me more about that..." or "Help me understand that better..."
